I’ve only done about 5 hikes in Big Bear but this has to be my favorite so far. You need a $5 forest pass, which I got from a nearby 7-11. They have a pretty big parking lot. They also have porta potties. It was pretty hot and sunny but there is shade in some parts. I would said it’s an easy to mid hike. I’m not an avid hiker but it was doable. From start to the top where you can hit the famous PCT is 2 1/4 miles. It’s beautiful all the way up! We did hike early (on a a Wednesday) and didn’t see many people until we were on our way down. I hiked with my 9yr old and she loved it, too!

Best trail views in Big Bear! You’ll enjoy both lake and local mountain views. Our time includes snack time at the top (where it meets the PCT). The discovery center rates this hike as “difficult” but if you take it slow, especially on the rock rubble and steps, you can do it! If you really want difficult, continue on to Bertha Peak. 🥵 We’ve done it before but it’s less enjoyable that Cougar Crest. Last week this trail had a portion covered by snow, ice and slush but today it was perfect! On the way back, you may accidentally venture off trail near the end. The trail was recently changed and the previous path is still easily visible. No worries though! You’ll connect back to the correct trail shortly. The only bathroom and trash is at the trailhead. Use them and pack-in, pack-out on the trail. Bring water! There’s a parking lot that you need an adventure pass for. Other options are leaving from the campground across the street, or the neighboring Discovery Center.

Great trail which has a amazing view on Big Bear lake. I highly recommend to continue and reach Bertha Peak even if it is the hardest part of the trail. The view is worth it

What a great trail. Friendly, easy, and interesting. Perfect activity for the whole family, and make sure to visit the 'discovery center' that is next to it. They really did a good job of explaining the wild life of the big bear area. Very impressive

Great 2-mile trail up to the ridge where it meets the Pacific Crest trail. From there you can hike up to Bertha Peak ... The road is very steep but the views from the top are great.
